Chief of Police presents to the class

Wheat Ridge Police Department (WRPD) has opened registration for the 2017 Citizen's Police Academy (CPA) held from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday nights for 12 weeks

The purpose of the CPA is to offer people who live and/or work in the City of Wheat Ridge an opportunity to learn first-hand about the practices and operations of the Wheat Ridge Police Department. Police and civilian personnel will present lectures and demonstrations to help CPA participants gain an understanding of the department's mission and its focus on community policing to prevent crime and protect those who live, work and play in Wheat Ridge.

Topics presented during the Citizen Police Academy include:

  • Community policing/problem-solving
  • Crime scene investigation/crime lab function overview
  • SWAT team deployment
  • Patrol operations
  • Criminal investigations
  • Criminal law and the court system
  • Use of force considerations and issues including a TASER demonstration
  • Use of the Firearms Training Simulator
  • Dispatch operations
  • Vice/narcotics
  • Traffic enforcement
  • Code enforcement/animal control
  • The role of public information and the media

The police department considers applicants who:

  • live or work in the City of Wheat Ridge
  • are 21 years of age or older
  • are willing to sign a Waiver of Liability
  • have no felony convictions
  • have no domestic violence convictions
  • have no significant or recent misdemeanor convictions
  • are not registered sex offenders

The final class meeting will consist of a graduation ceremony to celebrate the attendees' completion of the Academy on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. To apply or for more information WRPD/CPA
